clavia nord modular g2 patches
[To find out about modular synthesis, click here, or here for the basics of synthesis, with audio examples.]

To listen to sound design and music examples in .mp3 format that were created using modular synthesis in your default media player, click the various listen buttons below. You can jump to a relevant patch by clicking on the titles in the section link panel to the right.

All of these sound clips were created using only a Clavia Nord Modular G2 digital synthesiser system. No samples or external effects have been added and no further processing has been undertaken. If you have a G2, you can download the patches (in G2 .pch2 and .prf2 formats) that were designed to produce these sounds, by clicking on the G2 buttons below, or on the titles in the lower section of the section link panel. If you do not have a G2, you can download the free editor software that will run on both Windows and Mac OSX computers from the Clavia website... click here to go to the relevant download page.

[NOTE: Some Mac users may need to right click on the G2 buttons and select 'download' if the browser
does not recognise the .pch2 and .prf2 formats... all Windows browsers automatically recognise them.]

G2 patch download file size: 33.7 KB
TakeATranceOnMe - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2008

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

This performance uses several banks of chained sequencers that change the G2's variations to sequence a whole trance track, including filter sweeps, drum rolls and effects alterations. It also uses control sequencers and status modules to force the otherwise mono sequencers to produce polyphonic sounds. Although it is challenging and somewhat limited, Take a trance on me demonstrates that it is indeed possible to create whole tracks using the G2 alone. As well as all of the sequencers, there are also 15 different sounds programmed in the performance, with extra modules being devoted to produce the 'phat' hi hat sound. A full version can be heard by downloading the above G2 performance, or by downloading the.mp3 version found here.

AphoticAdventure - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2007

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

This interesting performance produces a dark and moody down-tempo track, based around a catchy (emulated) TB-303 hook. It features a host of varied and original drum and percussion sounds, creating interesting rhythms. A large amount of modulation is used throughout, from extra drums notes appearing to changes in note lengths and various effects parameters. A lot of randomisation has also been used to keep interest alive, although much of it is very subtle and could be missed by the casual listener. Longer .mp3's of this performance can be downloaded from here.

G2 patch download file size: 36.5 KB
Effervescent - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2007

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

Effervescent uses two different sets of drum sounds in two slots, one for an off-beat pattern and the other as the main drums... it therefore has a very jumpy feel to it. All of the sounds except the drums and bass heavily utilise modulation, that mutates them in various ways as the track progresses. The main sound in particular morphs from a small, dull sound to a bright, loud sound with it's effects also following the trend. Random modules are used to create some of the notes and to alter some sequences, including that of the snare drum, as they play. A full version of Effervescent can be heard by downloading the above G2 performance, or a longer .mp3 version can be heard here.

Reinforced - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2006

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

This thumping performance illustrates the maximum capacity of an expanded G2. It features a full length hard trance track, including a variety of drums and effects. It uses an array of linked step sequencer modules in one slot for triggering the other slots' variations. There are combinations of drums, sounds and effects in the three other slots. There is only a short audio sample available here, but the full version can be heard by downloading the above G2 performance, or on .mp3 from here.

Enigma - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2006

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

This performance shows a more interesting side of the G2's sequencers. They allow several sequences of different lengths to be mixed together seamlessly. This inspired the making of this laid back trance music with a 7/8 time signature. The sequencers are also used to bring the various sounds in and out throughout the song. Once again, to create a fuller listening experience, all the sounds have some kind of modulation applied to either the filters, envelopes, effects, oscillators, amplitude levels, or some, or all of these sources. A longer .mp3 version of this performance is available for download from here.

TranceByNumbers - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2006

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

The G2's key quantiser modules are used to good effect in this performance, allowing random LFO's to trigger specified notes within specified note ranges. The bass notes are key quantised random notes and the upper notes have been assigned different notes that they are allowed to play, depending on what the current bass note is. These note values are fed into internal busses and all the other sounds use combinations of them. This effectively means that the notes and melodies in this track will be different each time it is played. The different sounds have different on/off cycles (all multiples of four, so they switch on and off in time with other sounds), so there are numerous combinations that unfold over time. Some sounds also have further randomisation in when they sound, ie. extra kicks, claps, etc. A longer .mp3 version of this performance is available for download from here.

music patches  •  aceeeeeeeed

audio sample length 1:36
G2 patch download file size: 19 KB
Aceeeeeeeed - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2006

Aceeeeeeeed was inspired by the sounds of years gone by. In particular, it features recreations of some of the classic Roland TR-808 and TR-909 drum sounds and an emulation of the heavenly TB-303 bass machine. Logic modules are used to bring the various sounds in and out at specified times and these times are different for each sound, so the song plays endlessly without ever exactly repeating. A random LFO controls the filter on the TB-303 sound which gives an almost human touch to it. Other LFO's modulate a variety of parameters on the other sounds as the song progresses. A much longer .mp3 version of this performance can be downloaded from here.

G2 patch download file size: 31 KB
Metamorphosis - Sheridan.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2006

[NOTE: This performance will only work correctly on G2X and expanded G2 synthesisers.]

This outstanding performance really demonstrates the full capabilities of an expanded G2, making use of many random modules to modulate drum and note placement and note pitches. It features full drums, bass, and several sounds, all with lots of modulation, hence the name. The sounds are programmed to come and go at set intervals which overlap with each other, using logic modules. The result is a never ending whole track, with an improvised acid jazz trance feel (if there is such a thing). The audio clip for this patch is very short and is just to give you an idea, but the patch contains much, much more. A 9+ minute .mp3 of this performance can be heard from the electro-music.com website... click here to go there.

drum patches

These patches use modular synthesis to create a wide variety of drum sounds. Each patch has different sounds programmed into the G2's eight variations. Most of them (except hi hats and percussion, as these are too complicated) also have morph knobs assigned to the most important parameters in variation one, to allow quick adjustments to be made. Each patch also has a switch module (named 'Gate from') to enable use from either the internal sequencer, or from an external sequencer or keyboard. There are no audio examples here as there are simply too many sounds altogether.

Most of these patches use up to a whole DSP chip (out of four on an unexpanded G2), so if possible, it is a good idea to sample the sounds to free up DSP for other purposes. Alternatively, you can use the final patch, Drum machine.pch2, which provides 'cut down' versions of the Kick, Clap, Hi hat and Snare machines in one convenient patch, as featured in some of the music patches above.

drum patches  •  kick machine

G2 patch download file size: 4 KB
Kick machine.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This patch uses three oscillators; one for the bass element, one for the mid, or vibration, element of the slightly more realistic sounds and the third is for the top end, or beater sound. All the tools for creating good kick drums are provided, from envelope decay shaping, to FM and distortion. Note: When designing kick drums, remember that the mid/high frequency elements need to be loud enough to cut through the mix.

Sorry, there is no audio example for this patch.

drum patches  •  clap machine

G2 patch download file size: 4 KB
Clap machine.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

The clap machine features a delay circuit that is similar to that used in the revered Roland TR-808 drum machine and so these types of claps are easily achieved. It features two noise modules and one oscillator... to use just noise, put the oscillator's FM control to full. It also has a 'tail' circuit to allow a very basic reverb type effect to be produced from the noise.

Sorry, there is no audio example for this patch.

drum patches  •  snare machine

G2 patch download file size: 4 KB
Snare machine.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This patch features two sine oscillators for the bass element and a triangle wave oscillator with two pitch shifter modules, which are necessary to create the vibrations of more realistic sounding snares. The wave shaper module in the triangle circuit also simulates this effect. The top end is produced by a noise module and all have their own envelopes and filters. A wide variety of snare sounds can be produced by simply adjusting the morph controls in this patch. Further ideas include altering the frequencies and amplitude decays of the two sine waves and the noise filters.

[NOTE: Velocity input (either internal or external) is patched to the final filters
and shaping modules to allow more expression from velocity changes.]

drum patches  •  hi hat machine

G2 patch download file size: 5 KB
Hi hat machine.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

Hi hats have a huge number of high frequency overtones, which can be emulated well using FM, with pulse waveforms in particular. This patch uses six oscillators and has two methods of creating the sound; FM and normal subtractive synthesis. The sound can be drastically altered by adjusting either the oscillator frequencies, duty cycles (shapes), FM amount, or the filters. To use FM only, turn off oscillators one, three and five, which are clearly labeled in the mixers. The open and closed hat sounds are both created from the same oscillators, using modulatable envelope decays, which are controllable from either the internal sequencer labeled 'Opn/Closd', or from the modulation wheel MIDI controller number one) on an external keyboard when the 'Gate from' switch is set to 'Keybrd'.

drum patches  •  percussion machine

G2 patch download file size: 5 KB
Percussion machine.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This patch features three independent oscillator circuits, each providing their own filters, envelopes and shaping options. The variations have some popular Roland TR-808 and TR-909 sounds programmed, such as cow bells, rim shots, claves and also some bongos... the 'mutant percussion' sound in Cascades was created by tweaking this patch... click here to go to the music page to hear a sample of Cascades. Creating particular percussive sounds can be quite tricky, but a wide selection can be attained by slightly altering the variations in this patch.

drum patches  •  drum machine

audio sample length 0:33
G2 patch download file size: 7 KB
Drum machine.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

[NOTE: New improved version uploaded on 27 September 2007.]

This highly useful patch features 'cut down' versions of the Kick, Snare, Hi hat and Clap machine patches, losing the ability to produce the more realistic sounds, but retaining good electronic style drum sounds. It uses one whole DSP chip for all of the sounds, which is more practical and is featured (with some tweaks) in most of the music patches above. It has 32 drum sounds programmed in the eight variations and the most important parameters can be controlled by simply adjusting the morph controls in variation 8.

Other important parameters that can change the sound dramatically include [for the kick drum] the (pitch) 'Env Shape' module under the 'Pitch Env' module and the 'BeaterOsc' oscillator shape and linked filters, [for the clap] the 'Noise1' module's color control and the 'Density HPF' module's freq control, [for the hi hats] the 'Osc 3' oscillator shape and linked filters, [for the snare] the 'Noise eq' module's parameters and the top two 'Amp Env' decay times. The audio example features two bars of each of the eight variations in the patch.

sound design patches

Sound design describes several things. When talking about films, it describes the long, entire process of planning, recording and mixing the soundtrack, but in its simplest form, it basically describes the designing, or creating of sounds. This could be using a microphone, a sampler, a computer, or whatever, but in this case, the tool is modular synthesis and the sounds that have been designed here are real world sounds, as opposed to musical sounds. These examples were painstakingly recreated on the G2 from audio clips that were analysed in both the time and frequency domains. Some of them sound extraordinarily close to the actual sounds they emulate.

sound design patches  •  south american jungle atmosphere (morning)

audio sample length 0:27
G2 patch download file size: 13 KB
Jungle.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2006

This impressive performance accurately recreates the atmosphere of a South American jungle in the morning. It uses three of the four available slots, with all three outputs being fed into a true stereo reverb in one of the slots. There are two different types of bird sounds, two different insect group sounds and also occasional tree frog sounds, each constructed in their own workspace, with their positions in the stereo field, their distances and tone variations being semi-random.

Helicopter.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This amazing patch emulates the commonly heard sound of a helicopter with an exceptional degree of realsim.. Unlike other synthesised helicopter sounds, this one models all of the various components of the sound; the engine, the blades, the blade axle, the Doppler effect caused by the movement and even the interference of wind on the sound. The first two variations have the helicopter flying past, or circling above and the third variation is a basic attempt at the sound of the helicopter starting up and taking off.

sound design patches  •  a bad day for camping

audio sample length 1:54
G2 patch download file size: 20 KB
BadDayForCamping.prf2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This unbelievable performance produces an evolving soundscape that recreates the sounds heard in a particular place at a particular time. The scene is set: You've driven to the countryside, through some woods. You pull off the road into a small lay-by and park the car. You then walk a short distance through the trees until you find a small grassy clearing, where you pitch your tent for the night. Then you notice the wind picking up... this performance picks up the story from there.

It uses all four slots, with the first taken up by a thunder patch, the second with the rain including the sound of rain on the tent, the third by the wind in the trees (stereo) and an attempt at a bird flying past and the fourth features a surprise patch that comes in after a few minutes.

Dog Barking.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This is a simple but effective patch, with a small group of modules controlling the timing and number of barks, and another group to create the sound. It uses a Filter Voice module to recreate the dog's throat and mouth resonances. With some slight parameter tweaking, this patch can easily recreate many animal or human sounds... give it a go.

G2 patch download file size: 9 KB
Sea waves.pch2 - © nitetime productions 2005

This patch makes a basic attempt at emulating the sound of sea waves crashing on a sandy beach. It takes into account that not every wave sounds the same and so introduces wave size variations. It mainly uses noise oscillators for the wave sounds and works in stereo for a fuller effect. Feel free to send in any better sea patches that you may have created via the contact page.
