The expansion of offshore wind farms is essential for the German energy transition. The sites designated for this purpose are auctioned off by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA). In August 2025, two auctions concluded without a single bid – a first, according to industry associations. An outdated auction design that places risks disproportionately on project developers is being cited as the cause.
