IF YOU WANT A BREATHTAKING SHOW

Phare Ponleu Selpak
with Compagnie Ubi: Rouge

Brought to Milton Keynes direct from Cambodia by IF: 2012, this is the UK Premiere of Rouge.

Thought-provoking and dramatic, Rouge is a mesmerising and uplifting performance echoing the hope that the current, younger generation have for Cambodia’s future. This extraordinary show is about memory in a country where younger generations have grown up believing that the Khmer Rouge and their reign of terror in the 1970s is just myth.

A collaboration between Cambodian circus school Phare Ponleu Selpak and French dance company Compagnie UBI, Rouge features a cast of exceptional young male performers and live music from a two-piece gamelan band.

These daring young performers use dance, acrobatics, drama and circus arts to rewind and replay memories of their country's recent history to remarkably powerful effect.

Phare Ponleu Selpak (meaning 'brightness of the arts') was set up in 1994 by eight young Cambodians who had spent their childhoods in refugee camps at the Thai border. Gathering together children at risk including streets kids, trafficked children and orphans and, using the skills they had been taught in the refugee camps, they helped them to reintegrate into society. Phare Ponleu Selpak offers training in circus arts and now 20 of those children are young adults who have become outstanding professional artists, performing in Cambodia and around the world.

This is the first time that the company  Phare Ponleu Selpak  and also the production Rouge have been to the UK.
