A pleasant day dawned and after buying lunch at the village shop, we set off from the village green. Rick was walking with us today, but not Erin. We crossed the river bridge and through the fields past Grinton, then we carried along the river and onto the road to Marrick Priory. |
We made good progress up this quiet road and soon were at the priory itself. From here we climbed a pleasant path up to Marrick. We paused at the top, because I had just received a text message on the mobile phone from Stephen, our son, who was sailing on a tall ship from Ireland. |

Whilst I was answering the message, Glynn and Helen Foley, their daughter Kate, and George walked up. This was an amazing coincidence - they are some of our best friends from Sheffield. It turned out that Glynn, Kate and George were doing the Coast to Coast too, and Helen had joined them for the morning. They had even been in the Kings Arms at Reeth the night before, and we never knew! |
After a while chatting, we decided to get on with the walk. I must admit I didn't concentrate too much on the route for the next few miles, as Glynn strode in front, searching the way, and we followed chatting all the time. |
Eventually, we arrived in Marske, and we said goodbye to the Foleys here, because Helen's car was parked there. We carried on through Marske village along the road, and then found the field path up to Applegarth Scar. The weather was quite hot by now, and once we had climbed up we stopped for lunch in the shade under a tree. Whilst we were eating, Glynn, Kate and George passed us, and we were not to see them again for the rest of the trip. |

After lunch, we walked through farmland and into Whitcliffe Wood. |
From here it was a long hot walk down into Richmond. The bustle of the town came as a bit of a shock, but we soon found our guesthouse. Phil and I went into the town in search of a venue for the night's meal for twelve. |
After a few false starts, we found a Wetherspoons pub, which was plenty big enough to take us all. The twelve of us had a great night: Nancy and Joe (who were staying an extra night in Richmond); Tinny and Adryan (who were going to Danby Wiske like us); Lynda and Howard (who were doing the 23 miles to Ingleby Cross); Rick and Erin (who also were coming to Danby Wiske) plus the four of us. |
