We had made it! No injuries except for a few blisters, which was half expected. What was not expected was the comradeship we had met along the way. We had met so many interesting people on the way, and had shared fortunes and misfortunes with them over 190 miles.
In general, I think we paced the route about right. The last day (seventeen and a half miles) was rather long, and there we some easy days (only nine miles) which were perhaps a little short (before I did this, I wouldn’t have called a 9-mile walk ‘short’).
Our difficulty now will be to find a walk that was anything like as good. Rarely had there been any scar on the landscape in the 190 miles. There had been beauty nearly every step of the way, and a tremendous variety of scenery, which means we were never bored. Although at times the going had been hard, I did enjoy every step (apart from one or two as I sank into the bog on Nine Standards!).
