British in Europe - Our Priorities

A Statement from the BiE Steering Team on our engagement until the end of 2020

Dear Briton in Europe,

The BiE Steering Team has remained largely unchanged since December 2016. For almost four years, in partnership with our national group administrators and our supporters, ten individuals have been working hard to secure the citizens' rights of 1.2 million UK citizens living in the EEA and Switzerland.

Over this time, this significant workload has mainly been carried out on a volunteer basis. We have fundraised to help with expenses and some limited payments for specific projects. We estimated it would cost a minimum of 100,000€ to support this organisation through 2020, of which we have raised 65,000€ (thank you to everyone who has supported us so far). With two-thirds of the required funding, we have been unable to compensate people for the vast majority of the work they have done and have been running on empty since the end of August, with nothing in the bank for 2021.

Added to this, changes are afoot within the team with three members stepping down at the end of the year. This reduction in available hands, along with our lack of funds means we need to revise what we can do going forward.

Our priorities for early 2021 will be reviewed once we have a better understanding of how well implementation is progressing and whether we have the funds to continue.

'Right of Return with non-UK Family Members' amendment

After winning the vote for the amendment in the House of Lords, it was voted down in the Commons.
On Wednesday we returned to the Lords where the Lib Deb peers made passionate speeches on our behalf but the Labour peers abstained meaning that the vote was ultimately lost. The foundations have been laid for a future campaign once the government changes.

Implementation Report from the Select Committee

Over the summer three BiE representatives gave evidence, by video, to the Select Committee for the Future Negotiations chaired by Hilary Benn. This week the committee issued their Implementation Report which made three key conclusions for British nationals living in the EU.
