Girls’ Education Forum: Taking the Revolution Worldwide #SheWill

7th July 2016, London: Camfed alumna Fiona Mavhinga and Nasikiwa Duke were invited to represent CAMA, Camfed’s 55,000-strong pan-African alumnae network, at the Girls’ Education Forum hosted by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), galvanizing action for girls’ education around the globe. Here are some of the highlights...

Fiona Mavhinga, one of the first girls supported to go to school by Camfed, joined a roundtable of global leaders, challenging the international community to ensure that no marginalized girl is left behind in the drive for quality education for all. Describing her journey from a childhood of extreme poverty in rural Zimbabwe to a high flying career as a lawyer and co-founder of the CAMA network, Fiona gave powerful testimony to the transformational power of education.

  11. Nasikiwa later delivered a life skills session from the Learner Guide Program's My Better World Curriculum during a Self-Esteem Workshop.

  15. During the closing plenary, Fiona and Nasikiwa shared the impact and successes of Camfed’s approach, with educated young women as the experts in girls' education, changing the status quo in their communities.

In a panel with Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening, and Chair of the Global Partnership for Education, Julia Gillard, moderated by the inimitable Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, Camfed CEO Lucy Lake underlined Camfed's commitment to supporting one million girls in sub-Saharan Africa to go to secondary school by 2020 . She discussed the importance of creating a safe, quality learning environment for girls at school, and support for their transition to productive and fulfilling livelihoods after school.

  25. In the evening, Fiona and Nasikiwa shared insights and experiences with young activists Live at the View from the Shard, as Global Citizen brought together inspiring speakers and intimate music by Laura Mvula and Tom Odell.
