Case 2

In this case a patient has already been diagnosed with a bloodstream Candida albicans infection by classical means. Treatment with fluconazole has proved ineffective and the p[atient is now very ill. You urgently need to test the sensitivity of the isolate to fluconazole.

You know that a lot of molecular work has been done on the molecular basis of fluconazole resitance and that conventional testing could take several days

would you like to

- ask your friendly mycologists about possible rapid testing for fluconazole resistance in Candida?

- not bother and go ahead with the standard plate based test?

- ask about rapid testing and simultaneously go ahead with the standard susceptibility test?
