Appendix C. Survey methodology for rare or poorly known species potentially threatened by grazing.
Searches for rare or poorly known species potentially threatened by grazing were conducted between September 2007 and June 2012. Searches involved foot surveys with the estimated area searched based on the width of detectability and the distance measured with a GPS. The width of detectability was estimated based on the visibility of a particular species at each site. Thus the width of detectability for a tall herb in heavily grazed habitat was 20 m, and only 2 m for a short herb in dense grassland. Area of occupancy for the species was based on existing and survey records and micro-habitat preferences. Thus if a species was only known from flooded areas within a geographic range of 2500 km², and vegetation mapping in that region (Wilson et al. 2002) indicated that this habitat constituted 10% of the landscape the area of occupancy was assumed to be 250 km². All searches were after abundant rainfall in the appropriate season (summer or winter), indicated by the timing of previous collections. Population densities within the search area were multiplied by the area of occupancy.
