Appendix D. Extracellular enzyme activities on substrates harvested during the first three years of the experiment by substrate (averaged over sites and treatments).

Fig. D1. Hydrolytic enzyme activity on substrates harvested during the first three years of the experiment by substrate (averaged over sites and treatments). Substrates are ordered from lowest to highest N concentration. Different letters indicate significant differences between substrates for any particular variable (P < 0.05, Tukey's HSD). When more than one enzyme exhibited similar differences among substrates, letters "straddle" multiple enzymes (0.5 y - NAG and PHOS; 1 y - GLU, CBH, NAG; 3 y - CBH, NAG). Values are means with standard error bars.

Fig. D2. Oxidative enzyme activity on substrates harvested after two and three years of decomposition by substrate (averaged over sites and treatments). Substrates are ordered from lowest to highest N concentration. Different letters indicate significant differences between sites for any particular variable (P < 0.05, Tukey's HSD). Values are means with standard error bars.
