Attraction-Selection-Attrition (ASA)
Why do organizations have a particular culture? ASA is a mechanism that explains how an organization’s culture maintains and protects itself.
Back
Employees who share a particular organization’s values are more likely to feel attracted to that organization. These are the employees who would want to work in this organization.

Selection
Employees who share an organization’s values are more likely to be selected as employees of that organization.
However, selection systems are not perfect. What happens when an employee who does not fit with the organization’s values is actually hired?
One possibility is attrition – the employee leaves voluntarily because they do not fit in and feel unhappy, or involuntarily because they are not effective members of the organization.
Attrition
An alternative to attrition is assimilation – employees may ultimately change their values to better fit with those of the organization.
Assimilation
As can be seen, as a result of Attraction-Selection-Attrition, an organization retains and protects its core culture.
