MESSAGE | Sans Peur or "without fear".. wow.. that is exactly what I would expect from a Sutherland! I have lived in Colorado my whole life (39yo) and I know next to nothing about my family's history, other than my grandfather, James Pearl Sutherland came to Colorado from Missouri around 1930 and I believe was born around 1910. I'm not sure if he was born in Missouri however. The Sutherlands I do know are hard-working, proud, and relentlessly strong, in the face of all challenges they meet. I am proud to find our distant heritage is reminiscent of these values. |

believe that my grandmother, Karolina Charlotte Rika Sutherland - b.
Houtbaai (Hout Bay), South Africa c. 1887 was descended from Lt. Colonel
John Sutherland and his wife, Ushrut (Ushrat) Begum Hussaini who lived
in the Knysna area of the Cape Province, South Africa for a few years in
the early 1840's before returning to India in 1845 (he died there, of
sunstroke in 1848). When the family left SA, two sons remained: John and
Eric. I believe that Eric was born in 1827 so he would most likely have
been too old to have been my grandmother's father but about the right
age to have been her grandfather.
Any help will be much appreciated. |

MESSAGE | Hi,
I am a New Zealander of Scottish descent - my great Grandfather was a Sutherland who came to NZ during the 1890s. Going back to 1798, I have a copy of a marriage record, as follows: "Angus Sutherland (Private in the 2nd Fencibles Regiment commanded by Capt Gordon) and Jean Imrie both parishioners listed for proclamation the 20th January in order to marriage, and being proclaimed were married the 30th January". I have been trying to find reference of Angus and the regiment with a Capt Gordon around 1798 - but can't find them linked at that time. I did find some Gordons who were officers, but not a Capt and no info that could be called evidential. Also trying to find Angus's parents. Any help would be appreciated. Angus settled in Auchterarder, heading a long line of bootmakers, but I have no information of life before Auchterarder. I see Debbie Robertson has signed this guestbook too - we have worked out a family link there which is cool :) |

MESSAGE | I
am very happy to find a site like this in the Website. My name is Olga
de las Mercedes Guzmn Reyes, from Chile. During 30 years,I have been
searching information about the history of my family.
I have an aunt of 86 years old, who says that my great-great-grandfather, William Sutherland, was a scottish marine of the sea who lived a shipwreck at the coast of Chile (Pichilemu-Bucalemu) about 1800. She says that he came from Sutherland, Scotland and was a son or a nephew of The Duke of Sutherland. His family had shipyards and great spinnings. The ship was of the Sutherland`s Family. 3 survived at the shipwreck: Mackenzie, Applegreen and Sutherland. This is my great-great-grandfather who married in Chile and maintained correspondence with his relatives in Scotland. Sutherlands in Chile lived in the zone of La Estrella-Alcones-Marchige-Quebrada Marchant-Reto-Peablanca-Pumanque and Pichilemu. Some farms were: "Alcones", "La Quebrada", "El Peral". My great-great-grandfather,I was told, took steps to bring the steam railroad to Chile, between Marchige-Alcones. Some years later, it was 3 calls to the Sutherlands descendants at the chilean newspaper or periodical, because of a great heritage in Sutherland, Scotland. Because of dificulties in the communications and find the documents at the age, this heritage was losed. Great-great grandfather: William Sutherland Great-grandmother: Mercedes Sutherland (1839-1924) Grandmother: Raquel Fernndez Sutherland Grandfather: Isaas Reyes Sutherland (They are cousins). I have photos of my grandparents. In the Civil Record of Chile appears Alexander John Sutherland McLean, dead in 1889, Chile. I dont know what relation has with William Sutherland. If anyone knows anything about this story, please, send me an e-mail. God bless you Countess Elizabeth of Sutherland and all of you, Sutherlands, wherever you are! |

MESSAGE | Hello all,
I have been searching for family members back 'home' for some time. I'm a first generation New Zealander, my father was George Douglas Sutherland, born 1918 in Saskatoon, Canada. His father was Angus MacDonald Sutherland, originally from Wick and Thurso areas in Scotland. Angus had a sister Jessie and brothers Walter, John, George, William and Arthur. They were all children of George and Christina Sutherland. George senior was a schoolteacher and died I believe about 1936. Both George and Christina were interred in the New Elgin cemetery. Christina's maiden name was MacDonald. All I know is that Arthur had a son named Iain who was a doctor around Dundee. Unfortunately he died some time around 1990. Iain had three children I think, one a daughter named Lesley who in turn had a son Hugh. If anyone is able to add to this information, I would love to hear from you. Thanks heaps. |

- here goes, again. Until recently, I thought my grandmother was an
only child. I've found a family tree and it shows she was one of seven
children. Her name was Jean Stinson Sutherland. She married William
Gordon Shepherd and they had my father David Brock Shepherd. Her parents
were Reverend Alexander Sutherland (b. Guelph Ontario Sept 1833 - d.
June 1910) and Mary Jane Moore (1836 - 1917). The tree lists her
siblings as: Evelyn, William Alexander, Hamilton, Hugh Brock, Frank
Alexander, and Ida Mary. The tree also shows marriages and children of
these siblings, but unfortuately stops in the early 1920's and 30's. Rev
Alexander Sutherland's parents were Nicholas Sutherland (Dundee
Scotland) and Mary Henderson (Isley Scotland).
If any of you have information on this part of the Sutherland clan, it would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother died in 1970 and my father in 1984 - so my sources are limited. Thanks for your time and this site! |

PETERMURRAYmarriedELIZABETH SUTHERLAND [1789-1873][1790-1865] An entry in the 'Rolland' - Sutherland Local Militia ...Muster Roll 1813, shows a Private Peter Murray, born circa 1789, 5'7" tall of Langwell, Rogart. Peter would appear to be a son of Robert and Mary Murray of Langwell but this has never been proved. Peter was dubbed 'Peter Langwell Murray' and often called just 'Peter Langwell' which designation clung to him throughout his life. It is known from family legend that he spent some time in Paisley, Renfrewshire, possibly during his time with the Militia. He returned to the family croft at Langwell. He married Elizabeth Sutherland circa 1812 at Rogart. They had the following children born at Langwell (OPR): ISABELLA, born 29 December 1813; JEAN, born 1815; JOHANNA or JOHN, born 3 May 1817; CHRISTIAN, born 15 July 1819; JANET, born 22 March 1822; JOHANNA, born 25 March 1825; GEORGE, born 2 January 1828; DOLLINA, born 26 November 1830 and JOHN, born 14 July 1833. Peter's wife Elizabeth is described in a family book as being of goodly height, light complexion, even temperament, pleasing personality, and as being an excellent and capable manager of the household. Family legend stated that she was a distant cousin to the Countess of Sutherland but this has never been proved. The same legend tells that Peter (sometimes recorded as Patrick) owned the land at Langwell but in fact he is shown on the 1824 records of Rogart as a tenant in Langwell along with many other tenants. Elizabeth's sister Jean had married John Embleton and left Scotland for Canada where he established a general store in Streetsville, Ontario, near Tornoto. William Sutherland, a younger brother of Jean, accompanied them to Streetsville, and from there wrote such glowing descriptions of the advantages of farming in Ontario over the difficulties in the Highlands of Scotland, that Peter Murray was inspired to make the trip also. He and Elizabeth left Rogart with their children and settled on the 10th to the 11th Lines in the area known as 'Zorra'. It is thought that the family arrived in Canada in 1835. |

SUBJECT | Hello from NZ Sutherlands |
MESSAGE | Our branch of the New Zealand Sutherlands descend (we believe) from the Sutherlands of Langwell?
Our family connection is from ALEXANDER ROBERT SUTHERLAND (born c.1804 at Badbea, Latheran, Caithness died NZ 21 Oct 1877) and his wife ELIZABETH McKAY (born c.1811 - died NZ 3 Aug 1866) married 22 June 1838 at East Broro in the Parish of Clyne, Sutherlandshire. Alexander was a leasehold farmer in Badbea and, as happened to many others in the 1830s, his lease was not renewed hence the decision to emigrate after the birth of their first child. Alexander and Elizabeth emigrated to NZ - departing London on 15 Sep 1839 on the "Oriental" and arriving at Port Nicholson NZ on 31 Jan 1840. Three families from the Badbea / East Broro area came over on the Oriental: the Sutherlands, the Bartons and the Sinclairs. It was an adventurous undertaking and they were (we believe) amongst the first to emigrate. Alexander's father was WILLIAM SUTHERLAND of Badbea. William married twice and Alexander's mother was his second wife. She was originally also a Sutherland from Anchton Loch (?) but she had married a Sinclair (and had one daughter), before marrying William Sutherland - reverting to the Sutherland name and having ??? children to William. William Sutherlands father was a DAVID SUTHERLAND of Ousdale (?) of the Langwell Sutherlands (?) and traces us back to c.1700. Apparently DAVID AND GEORGE SUTHERLAND OF LANGWELL were of a branch of "Sutherlands of Force" (?) and there is a note about a Donald Sutherland (of Force) getting "Wadset of Langwell in 1676" (tho'I have no idea what this means). There was also a JOHN SUTHERLAND (possibly a brother to William - but I'm not sure on this) - John was born c.1768 at Ousdale (?) and died 1864 and he had a brother DONALD SUTHERLAND who apparently died at Waterloo? We have been told that David and George Sutherland had a direct line from William IV Earl of Sutherland, who married Princess Margaret, daughter of Robert the Bruce but I have no idea if that is correct. Sounds good tho! BACK TO ALEXANDER AND ELIZABETH SUTHERLAND: they had 9 children, one of whom was MARGARET SUTHERLAND (1847 to 1921). Margaret would be my Great Great Grandmother and some five (?) generations later I bear an eerily uncanny resemblance to her. Margaret Sutherland married Neil Small and they had 6 children; one of whom was Elizabeth Small who married John Lambert. Elizabeth and John in turn had 8 children - one of whom was Elsie Sutherland Lambert, who married John Pendreigh (my maternal grandparents). At 81 yo, my mother, Margaret, is the eldest of their three children. All three children are still alive, all live in New Zealand; and all have children and grandchildren of their own. Note: Apparently ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND wrote a book Sutherlands of Ngaipu around 1940 which is both detailed and informative. I have no idea how to track it down however. Another point of interest is that my mother in law (Betty Randall here in the Barossa Valley, South Australia) also traces back to the Sutherlands in the region of Brora and Badbea, so we are presently attempting to see if we can trace back to any commonalities. Regards Claire Randall. Australia |

MESSAGE | its only now that i have realised the power of the internet,so please forgive my failure in any protocols.
I am a 42 yr old from the Bathgate area in West Lothian, i am now, and have always been so pro Scottish,I'm not biased in any way believe me.My former partner of 14 yrs was from South of the wall,Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. When we were younger we lived in Sutherland, at Skibo estate where Mrs Carnegie Miller was residing at the time, my dad worked with the forestry commission. It was when we lived there, that I first felt the need to be a real part of my family and wanted to be or play a big part in the sustainance of our great clan.I wanted to own,run and be the chief of the clan, such was my naivity.Even now,I still dream of being something big in the world of Sutherland,we can only but dream I suppose.I think its just the futile romantic in us. Anyway,I am now a retired ex soldier who is very interested in the clan gatherings and social aspects of our clan,I have nothing more than time on my hands and would love to hear from all and any other clan members, pen friends and the likes. I'm not exactly pc literate but I am trying.I would love to establish my links as far back as possible and claim my righful place as our clan chieftan.Yeh, ok,i am only hoping.Anyway I wish you all well and pray for your safe keeping, SANS PEUR, Robert sutherland |

MESSAGE | My name is Michael Ray Fox. I have a romantic story. My Great Grandmother Sutherland who lived in Windsor,Ontario Canada with my Dad's parents decides after her husband passes to return to the Highlands. She was in her early 80's. Just prior to WW11 hostilities she returns by ship to her beloved Highlands intending to stay. She was later visited in the Highlands by my Dad's brother during the war while he was stationed in England as a Canadian soldier. She was to have lived in or near Dornach on 1390 Skelborn Street or so goes the legend. After that she was never heard of again. Hopefully her wish to die and be buried in the Highlands came true. I will eventually get there one day. Thank you for a wonderful site. If anyone can help in my search for Ann Margaret Sutherland who had the maiden name of "Shingler" I would be forever in your debt. SUBJECT | Sutherlands in Lanark Co, Ontario, Canada |
MESSAGE | Hello To All Sutherlands,
I am trying to research my Sutherland lines without any success. My gr.gr.grandmother is GEORGINA SUTHERLAND b. abt. 1826, Almonte, Lanark Co, Ont, Can. Georgina married THOMAS OAKLEY June 18, 1844, Bathurst District, Ramsay Twp, Lanark Co, Ont, Can. by Rev. Alexander Mann, Presbyterian Minister. In my desperation to find Georgina's parents/siblings I started compiling a list of Sutherlands in the Ontario, Canada area. So far I have learned from my list that Georgina could be a sister or cousin to Cecilia Sutherland b. 1808 Scotland, she married Edward Nicholson. Cecilia's father is **George Sutherland. **Ref: Cecilia's obit & brief note in Auld Kirk Cemetery Book. George Sutherland arrived on ship George Canning in 1821, he arrived with wife and seven children - three sons & four daughters. Location: East Lot 11, Concession 05, Ramsay Twp, Lanark Co, Ont, Can. Note: George & David Sutherland came on the same ship & settled on adjoining farms. Other possible children for George are William b. abt. 1814 Scotland, James b. abt. 1816 Scotland and Mary Ann/Marion Sutherland 1831, Ramsay Twp, Lanark Co, Ont, Can. Marion/Mary Ann married William McEwan, Oct. 30, 1851, Bathurst District, Ramsay Twp, Lanark Co, Ont, Can. Any help solving my gr.gr.grandmother Georgina Sutherland's ancestry would be greatly appreciated. If you are related to any Sutherland's that emigrated from Scotland to the Ontario, Canada area especially any ties to Lanark County, I would extremely appreciate hearing from you. Have a Wonderful day, Madonna |

Well, I best get going. Talk to you later and I hope to hear from you sometime soon. Buh bye for now. |

MESSAGE | Hi to all Sutherland clans!
OK - here goes, until recently, I thought my grandmother was an only child. I've just found a family tree and it shows she was one of seven children. Her name was Jean Stinson Sutherland. She married William Gordon Shepherd and they had my father David Brock Shepherd. Her parents were Reverend Alexander Sutherland (b. Guelph Ontario Sept 1833 - d. June 1910) and Mary Jane Moore (1836 - 1917). The tree lists her siblings as: Evelyn, William Alexander, Hamilton, Hugh Brock, Frank Alexander, and Ida Mary. The tree also shows marriages and children of these siblings, but unfortuately stops in the early 1920's and 30's. If any of you have information on this part of the Sutherland clan, it would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother died in 1970 and my father in 1984 - so my sources are limited. Thanks for your time and this site! |

I have hit a brick wall in locating decendants of George and Jean Sutherland nee Gunn in relation to their son John Sutherland (1823-1913). John originally born in Langwell, Rogart, Sutherland Shire. He stayed in his native land until 1851 and moved to Australia with his wife Jessie Mackay and landed in Geelong April, 1952. I know that John had 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He had one son named Alexander and five daughters. The girls were Georgina, Jessie, Catherine, and the other two had married with last names of Henderson and Baynes. All information was found in an old newspaper clipping titled DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY (about the death of John Sutherland). Any information would be greatly appreciated. |

SUBJECT | Chirstianity (Sutherland History) |
MESSAGE | The
origins of the earliest residents of Sutherland date back some 6000
years and are somewhat obscure. There were ancient Picts and Celts who
built stone tombs, hill-forts, and brochs throughout their territory.
The 17th century historian, Sir Robert Gordon stated, "In the year of
Christ four score and two, there arrived a great company of Germans
named "Catti", a valiant people of mighty bodies who were banished out
of their native land for killing of a Roman general. At their first
arrival, their captain went onshore to spy the land, when he was
suddenly invaded by a company of monstrous big wild cats that much
molested the country. The fight between them was cruel, yet in the end
he killed them all. From thence the thanes and earls of Catti, or
Sutherland, even unto this day do carry on their crest or badge, above
their arms, a cat sitting with one of its feet upwards ready to catch
his prey." He continued, "There is not a rat in Sutherland. And, if they
do come thither in ships from other ports, which often happeneth, they
die presently as soon as they do smell the air of that country."
Whatever the fate of rats in the area, there is tradition that after
landing in the north of Scotland, the Catti named the area of Caithness
and their chief married the daughter of the Pictish king Brude.
From the end of the 8th century onwards, Norsemen attacked Scotland, gradually gaining a foothold. By the end of the 9th century, they had conquered Orkney, Shetland, the Western Isles, Caithness and Sutherland, and by the early 11th century, the Norsemen were in control of Scotland beyond the Moray Firth. They referred to the lower half of this province a "Suderland" as it was south of their homeland and of Caithness. This is the origin of the name "Sutherland". These groups, with their intermarriages, comprised the earliest ancestors. www.clansutherland.org/FrHistory.htm |

SUBJECT | Sutherland Family Tree |
MESSAGE | Hello to all. Like most others on this site I am hoping to learn more about my roots and about undiscovered family members. After briefly listing my known family, I hope that if any of the names in my tree sound familiar to anyone, you would contact me so that we might share some additional information. Ready? Here goes: my grandfather was William Sutherland, b 1884 in Edinburgh. He married Georgina McKay. His father was William, b 1846 in Wick, Caithness. He married Amelia Bain. His father was James, b 1814 in Wick. He married Isabella Ritchie. His father was John, b 1789 in Wick. He married Catherine Harrold. His father was James, b abt 1749. He possibly married Margaret Forbes (not proved yet). I am looking for anyone connected to any of these individuals and especially any of the siblings of my grandfather, William, b 1884 (namely: James, b 1870; Robert, b 1872; John, b 1879; Isabella, b 1882; Daniel, b 1886; Phyllis, b 1890 and Margaret, b 1892). Most, if not all, of these brothers and sisters emigrated to Canada and the USA in the late 1890's and early 1900's. I would really be interested to find some of their descendents, my cousins!!! Best of luck to all in searching for your ancestors! |

My parents are Daniel and Elizabeth Sutherland (my mother from the Brandes family, completely unrelated). My fathers parents were Peter and Barbara Sutherland. They had 4 kids, Mark Sutherland, Daniel Sutherland (my father), Fay Sutherland, and Amy Sutherland (who recently died tragically of cancer in her mid 40's of cancer). Mark Sutherland had two kids, Benjamine and Juliette, Daniel had 1, me and also inherited my half brother Peter de Florio, and Amy had 2 kids, Anna and Helena. I forget the name of the father of Peter Sutherland, my grandfather... I know that I have some relation to the Blacks in Hawaii and we are somewhat related to the Fairservice's. My father is a photographer, his website is: www.sutherlandphotos.com. There is also www.sutherlandphoto.com which is an artistic erotica website by a man named Tom Sutherland! |

MESSAGE | Great
to visit the site for the first time and congrats to all of those who
have contributed. I am the third Donald Sutherland (late father and
grandfather before me)and my oldest son is.....yes, the fourth! I have
assured him there is no pressure on him to follow suit, although he is
immensely proud of both christian and surnames! My father and gradfather
were both born in England and my son and I were both born here in
Melbourne. I once drove north from Surrey as far as Inverness in a
delapidated old mini before it died on me. My sole intention was to
reach Sutherland and yet the death of the mini and an impossibly tight
schedule meant I had to return south, a sad and sorry soul!
As a suggestion, is there any chance of including a photo of the Clan tartan so that I can use it as my wallpaper? Thought others might like to do so as well. Best wishes to all Sutherlands around the globe! |

MESSAGE | I have only recently started to look into my history and aren't having much luck. I know that my grandfather - George Johnston Cheyne - came to Australia from the Shetland Island's. I know that Cheyne's are a part of Clan Sutherland but I've no idea how we are connected. Can anyone help? I'm proud of my Scottish heritage and am the proud owner of a Sutherland tartan scarf!! |

MESSAGE | My
grandfather James Brandie settled in the Boston area Massachusetts,
USA. As I remember he was the Chief of Sutherland Clan in the Boston
area. I've had my genealogy done by J.Sturat Reid (Scottish Roots) and I
can't seem to see any of the names in these searches that are on your
website. Any suggestions? I am coming to Scotland June 7,
2002 for a bike ride then up to Aberdeen area to search the birthplace of my grandparents (Inverkeithney & Forgue). They had a good friend who was a lady in waiting for Queen Victoria, and I have a silver teapot that was given to her by the Queen, also a kilt of Royal Stuart plaid (which was supposedly our plaid) was given to us by this woman. Help. |

MESSAGE | I am a Sutherlin by birth and have always been proud of my Scottish heritage. My Grandmother Sutherlin was able to visit Scotland before her death and came back with great stories of the beauty of Scotland. My neice visited just this summer. My dream is to come home to Scotland myself. I have always felt the pull of Scotland and my Sutherlin heritage. Thanks for a great web site. My nephew, Rich Sutherlin, had me do some research as he is a naval aviator and wanted to incorporate the history of the family into his navy experience. He is now in the middle east. |
