Welcome to Stronger Somerset
Somerset urgently needs change to ensure our communities gain greater control over the things that matter to them, our children get the best start in life and our economy grows stronger.
To do this Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West & Taunton Council and South Somerset District Council have together launched Stronger Somerset – an ambitious strategy to reform local government.
Stronger Somerset will:
Create a stronger economy – delivering increased productivity, higher skills, and better wage levels
Ensure there are enough homes that are genuinely affordable to local people and have the community infrastructure to support them
Deliver more green businesses and jobs together with sustainable transport to connect our places and communities
Shape stronger communities with greater power and control devolved to local people to meet the challenges of child poverty, deprivation and isolation
Stronger Somerset will end the damaging cuts Somerset County Council has been forced to make because of the pressures it faces in adult and social care and its failing system for children with special needs.
Stronger Somerset will create two councils for Somerset, replacing the county council and the four district councils.
We will have a more joined up system of local government to ensure every person - young and old - lives well, our economy thrives and the needs of the climate emergency are met. Together, we can build a Stronger Somerset.
