School presented with Eureka flag
PUPILS of Trumera National School received a surprise last week when the
" Leathlobhair clan chieftain Carole Lalor-Millard, along with clan
committee members, visited their school.
The purpose of the visit was to make a presentation to the school of a replica
flag of the Eureka Stockade, The Southern Cross.
It was the flag hoisted by miners in Ballarat, Australia 151 years ago. The
links with the Raheen School come about because one of the leaders of the
miners’ uprising was Peter Lalor who resided not far from the school.
The " Leathlobhairs celebrated the 150th anniversary of the uprising on
December 3.
The pupils from the school completed a project on Lalor’s home, Tenekill
House.
Principal of the school Liam O’Neill said he was honoured to accept the flag
donated by the " Leathlobhair clan. He said it would be proudly flown over
the school every December 3.
Clan Chieftain Carole Lalor-Millard, a Carlow native, but now residing in
Abbeyleix, said the presentation of the Eureka Flag to the school was a very
special day and one that should not be forgotten.
PRO and clan chairperson Kevin Lalor-Fitzpatrick thanked Mr O’Neill for
initiating the Lalor project. He was glowing in his praise for the amount of
research that had been put into the project by all the students. He said he
looked forward to continued links between the " Leathlobhair clan and the
Trumera School.
Also at the presentation on the day was the great, grand nephew of the famous
Peter Lalor, Richard Lalor-Fitzpatrick.
Clan members who were also present were Tom Lawlor, Mary O’Mahony, Cllr
Michael Lalor, Mary O’Rourke and Mary Lalor-Fitzpatrick.
