Olave's Diary for 1903 January 1903 X Transcribed by Sue Ardern [aged nearly 14] [1903 03.jpg] Music, thou queen of heaven, come - charming spell That strik'st a stillness into hell Thou that tamest tigers and Fierce storms that rise With thy soul melting lullabies Fall down down down, from Those thy chiming (spheres?) To charm our souls as thou enchant'st our ears Robert Herrick [Next page a photo of a small person in the sea ] Aug 6th D. paddlin' at [Stirpindale?] 1903 05.jpg See Nov 4th last year. I hunted with the South Berks. This is a rather pleasant story I heard about the said hunt. Beyond Goring there is a nice long down where they can get a nice run. When they draw a small wood the horse always makes for a big wood near by & it is the duty of any of the field who see him break towards the wood to head him off into the open. One day a man saw & fox break away for the big wood & he & a friend headed him off so effectually that they rode over him & knocked him out. They were down in a hollow & when the rest of the field arrived the scene they came upon was this. One man on the ground nabbing the fox's back & the other pouring whisky out of his flask into the fox's mouth!! This is quite true. Mr De Burgh the master when we were there was a rotter. It was told that if he met a hurdle he got off his horse & went thru' instead of over. --- An auctioneer went to take an inventory. He was put alone in the dining room. The owner went down a few hours later, & found the decanters looking tried & this written in the man's book " Item: one revolving carpet" !! 1903 06.jpg [ A postcard stuck in - view of Rydal Water. ] [ Below it, a piece of paper stuck in, with this writing on :- ] Passed Rydal on the way from Windermere to Grasmere [ 9 miles ] on July 25th.
