Record an R1 + R2 and R2 Test

  1. Leave the "Earth Fault Loop Impedance" field as "TODO".

2. Enter the "R1 + R2" result (0.2 Ω) and the software will automatically add the Ze or Zdb of the fuse board supply (in this case, 0.4 Ω) to the R1 + R2 reading to give a total of 0.6 Ω. This will enable the R1, R2 and earth loop readings to be shown on the report.

The next circuit is an outside light fed from the Valet Bay which is inaccessible to carry out either, an earth loop or a R1 + R2 test. Using an earth continuity test pole we can only achieve a R2 test (0.34 Ω). This verifies the earth continuity.

An automatic observation will be offered when a "Compliance Check" is carried out.

Here are two of four automatic editable observations that will be offered relating to the situation where only a R2 test can be achieved.

  • "Unable to gain access to carry out earth loop tests - readings entered are from carrying out an R2 test only, with a wandering lead fed from another live source to prove earth continuity - therefore, unable to ascertain whether the earth loop impedance is low enough to operate the protective device in the required time. It is the inspector's opinion that there is no apparent risk for continued use and therefore, as agreed with the client, this observation is categorized as a limitation (LIMIT) subject to safe isolation procedures are in place before any maintenance on electrical equipment is carried out. Regulation 612.9"
  • "Unable to gain access to carry out earth loop tests - readings entered are from carrying out an r2 test only, with a wandering lead fed from another live source to prove earth continuity - therefore, unable to ascertain whether the earth loop impedance is low enough to operate the protective device in the required time. Due to the condition and/or method of installation of the electrical equipment the inspector cannot be confident that it is safe for continued use, therefore further investigation (FI) is recommended.
