Illustration of panning camera Illustration of tracking camera

A pan involves pivoting a camera whose base remains stationary. When panning with a moving subject the perspective on the subject changes. In this case, we begin with a frontal angle and end behind the subject. A track involves a dynamic camera moving through space. Tracking can maintain the same angle on a subject (here a profile view) as if the audience were walking along side.
