No Return - Part 3

(Intro
Part 1
Part 2)

I shone the torch through the glass in the locked door, expecting to see the internal quadrangle.

Oh!

I saw the road to my parents' house. This locked door was the one I'd passed in the car. The one I was worried about getting through. I was already inside.

I'd been in the school all along. The back section had been demolished, leaving three sides exposed. Nothing looked how it should. The school hall, Mrs Pennell's classroom, the headmaster's office... razed to the ground. But three banks of classrooms remained.

Many of them had ominous warnings about asbestos pinned to their doors. They were all shut. I couldn't get inside any rooms. Phew. Better go home then.

But there was a smaller door to one side of the locked one... and it was ajar. Oh, bloody hell. I shone the torch through. An empty room. I crept in. The windows looked familiar. In fact... oh, yes. This had been the cloakroom in my time. This is where I hung my coat at the beginning of each school day.

I crept back outside, and checked out the classrooms I'd occupied as a child. Through broken windows I saw them, unfamiliar, stripped as they were of furniture. No pictures on the walls, apart from the odd forlorn piece of crepe paper, or a papier mache fish. A notice pinned to one of the blackboards.

Oh, it was awful. So terribly terribly sad. An enormous part of my childhood, flapping loose like a broken wing.

I peered round the doorway of what I remembered as being the boys' toilets, and found abandoned photos, stuck to the wall.
