AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood
Art and Design Commissions

Description and aims
AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood commissioned Printed Textiles students from Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD) to design a banner to be showcased in their new office building, to reflect the company’s valuable work in the areas of science and technology, innovation and nature.
LUSAD has a long tradition of undertaking commission projects to create stunning work for all sectors of industry, commerce and charitable organisations.
About AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood
AstraZeneca is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. At AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood, its dedicated Research & Development site in Loughborough, research focuses on finding new medicines for respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema (diseases often associated with smoking and for which new medicines are desperately needed), as well as inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
AstraZeneca is a long-standing supporter of LUSAD and has commissioned a number of bespoke pieces of art and design.
How the project is being undertaken
The unique winning design by student Natalie Shaw was transformed into a giant 8-metre banner in specialist PVC material, ready to be suspended 3 storeys high.
Nick Rodgers, Lecturer in Printed Textiles at LUSAD, adds: ‘Natalie went about this important commission in a very professional manner. The project was delivered in budget and on schedule for AstraZeneca’s open day to mark the opening of the new office building.’
Impacts and benefits
The large banner provides a stunning focal point in the building’s impressive glass atrium; an area used daily by employees and visitors for prestigious conferences, events and networking.
‘The banner is extremely modern and complements the exciting architecture of the new building’ says Simon Proffitt, AstraZeneca’s Site Manager. ‘It gives a clean, crisp feel, which is particularly appropriate within this highly modern building.’
