East Midlands Knowledge Network: Routes To University Expertise

DTZ

Coaching and Mentoring

Description and aims

DTZ had, for some time, recognised the value of coaching and the benefits it could deliver within the organisation. In order to extend the reach of coaching across the company there was a need to develop its internal coaching capability whilst reducing the reliance on external coaches. A number of the Learning & Development team already had experience of, and an ability to implement, a coaching culture. It was identified however that to position a credible internal provision would require the underpinning of previous knowledge with a professional qualification.

The demands of the business meant that a residential or ongoing day release programme was not an option; however the benefits of cohort networking and the availability of academic and professional references to support participants were not an area which DTZ felt could be sacrificed.

About DTZ

DTZ is one of the ‘big four’ global real estate advisors operating across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and the Americas. Employing over 12,500 property professionals in 45 countries, DTZ works with clients to provide innovative real estate, capital markets and business solutions worldwide.

How the project is being undertaken

The Leicester Business School Postgraduate Certificate in Coaching provided the ideal solution for DTZ as it provided:
• A distance learning, accredited programme with minimal contact days
• Remote access to academics throughout the programme and face-to-face contact during skill development days
• An opportunity to network and learn from others
• Alignment to a recognized coaching body
• Self-study activities to test learning and provide a framework for reflection

Impacts and benefits

Breadth of Syllabus
The syllabus embraces both the organisational and individual aspects of coaching giving participants the confidence and ability to embed coaching within their organisation alongside developing the skill set and knowledge to be an effective coach themselves. This brings significant benefits as the impact of the participant extends beyond their own team allowing them to credibly influence culture and communication across the organisation.

Experiential Learning
Participants are required to practice and experience coaching relationships during the Certificate as part of their learning. This gives the added dimension of developing skills in a live environment with the ongoing support of the academic programme leader to explore, improve and hone participant skills and understanding.

University Accredited Qualification
Coaching is viewed as a key skill by DTZ however the resource implications of committing to a training programme meant that assurance was required of output quality. The University Certificate was the preferred option as it gives participants a transferable, nationally recognised, accredited qualification.
