Northampton Probation Service
Description and aims
The Probation Service received support from The University of Northampton’s Careers Service to recruit a Summer Placement to their Information Technology Department. The Careers Service advised them on how to approach the task, how to tailor their vacancy to suit their intended audience, how to structure their message and then communicate that message in the most efficient and cost effective manner. The Northampton Careers Service handled the student facing communication, working closely with both the client and the applicants throughout the application and interview stages.
About Northampton Probation Service
The Northampton Probation Service is a public sector organisation tasked to deliver effective and high quality services that address the concerns of victims, enhance public confidence and take account of the specific needs of offenders. When they needed to recruit a Summer Placement Student – operating at Masters Level or above – for their Information Technology Department, they turned to The University of Northampton’s Careers & Employability Service for help.
How the project is being undertaken
The Careers Service matched suitable students with the vacancy and then arranged for the first round of interviews to take place on the University campus. They then worked with the client to co-ordinate the second round of interviews, which resulted in an ideal candidate being selected for the position.
Impacts and benefits
This partnership between The University of Northampton’s Careers Service and Northampton Probation Service resulted in five suitable candidates being put forward for first round interviews from an applicant base of ten. Three applicants were selected by the client to go forward for second round interviews with one candidate being offered the position. The successful candidate went on to join the Probation Service full time and is now being funded to continue with their studies with the full support of their new employer.
