Broxtowe Youth Homelessness
Internships and Placements

Description and aims
A significant area of our work is to raise awareness of youth homelessness, promote available services of help and support as well as enable young people leaving home in an unplanned way to make informed choices. We provide young people with budgeting and other life skills that they are likely to need for independent living. Our ‘Peer Impact’ invites young people who have experienced homelessness to work with us as peer educators and share their own experiences to help prevent homelessness.
We operate a scheme that offers food packages and home starter packs.
We co-ordinate an Inter-Agency Forum providing an arena for representatives from a wide range of voluntary and statutory services to work in partnership, share information and develop initiatives.
Homelessness awareness training is offered to groups or individuals who work with young people and may be required to provide support to young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

How the project is being undertaken
The intern worked with our organisation between October 2009 and January 2010, working on an organisation evaluation project. The project looked at whether targets had been met, how much money had been spent, how much money our organisation needs, who valued the service and how the charity’s services fits in with strategies. The intern completed a project evaluation report at the end of the project and the work will be evaluated by our management committee.
The Intern also assisted with funding research and completed applications as well as compiling a list of potential funders.
Impacts and benefits
Increasing numbers of funders that ask for evaluations to inform them about what is going well, what isn’t and how the programme can be strenghtened.
For small charities funding is a major part of our work and help with this area of work will benefit the team and hopefully the organisation to be sustainable.
