These treats are very much based on deep fried and flavoured bones and the cooking in deep fat fryers naturally involves the generation of fat-laden fumes, which can cause odour problems. Special Pack needed to contain these odours.

How the project is being undertaken
Having recently attended a seminar at the Environmental Technology Centre, a representative of the district council decided to introduce Special Pack to the ETC.
Within the scope of its free five-day consultancy service, the ETC carried out a site survey and used a velocity probe to measure air movements within the installed odour removal system during periods when the bone material was being deep fried. These measurements helped to explain why the current system was not working and also allowed the ETC to carry out a free re-design to ensure that the installed equipment could operate to its maximum efficiency. However, this still proved to be capable of handling only 20% of the total volume of foul air and the ETC proposed that a biofilter should be installed to cope with the remaining 80% of odours from the cooking fumes.
Biofiltration
Biofiltration is an air treatment process where contaminants and odour-causing agents are filtered though a biologically active medium. The contaminants are absorbed from the air stream and the billions of indigenous microorganisms inherent within the filter medium convert the organic compounds of the contaminant to carbon dioxide and water. Biofilter media may consist of compost, activated carbon, bulking agents, buffering agents and inorganic additives. At Special Pack, the biofilter incorporated moistened bark chippings with recycled, plastic play balls to provide high voidance and assist in gas flow within the filter.
Impacts and benefits
The air-borne emissions from Special Pack Pet Treat’s factory are now well within the limits imposed by the District Council. This means there are no longer any complaints from neighbours, the working environment is much improved and, perhaps, most important, the company can continue operating and providing jobs for 11 people.
