Derby City Council
Leadership and Management

Description and aims
The council wanted to improve its service offer and quality through better trained managers and leaders.
About Derby City Council
Derby City Council is a large employer with more than 10,000 employees within a structure of team leaders, managers, departmental heads and executive. The services delivered range from social care and health, leisure and culture, education and learning, transport and roads, environment and business and economy.
How the project is being undertaken
Working closely with The Derbyshire Business School a tailor made and flexible Leading Manager Programme of training was developed for easy access by target staff. This took advantage both of the expertise in the Leadership and Management programme team as well as our e-learning unit.
Impacts and benefits
After a pilot period, the impact of the new training delivered a consistent professional approach across the Council activities, contributing to the council being promoted from a ‘good’ status to an ‘excellent’ status.
Individual staff have benefited by flexible access both on-line as well as facilitated short residentials.
January 2008 saw the 100th graduate of the Leading Manager Programme.
