Smith of Derby

Smith of Derby
Description and aims

Smith of Derby is a traditional company with traditional methods and practices. However the world market is experiencing major change. In the words of Smith of Derby MD Bob Betts ‘We have been world leaders in time for 150 years, but to stay ahead in today’s competitive global markets, we have to change and embrace change.’

The challenge was to identify and implement a change programme that retained the key traditional values yet opened up a new vista into a refreshed world without causing any damage. Engaging with the challenge involved a broad view of the business from product design, through manufacturing, training, marketing and the actual management of the business.

About Smith of Derby

Clockmakers Smith is firm with 150 years’ experience of clockmaking innovations, and is one of the few remaining British exponents of its craft. Smith of Derby clocks installed more than a century ago are still working in St Paul’s Cathedral and the clock tower at the University’s own Devonshire Campus in Buxton.

How the project is being undertaken

There has been a series of phased interactions between the University of Derby and Smith of Derby with a focus on the Learning Through Work programmes. These have allowed focused development of key people, teams and processes with strong workplace and role engagement.

Impacts and benefits

The programmes, which are enabling staff to achieve their full potential are helping Smith of Derby capitalise on a growing interest in timepieces in new markets and to engage more effectively with the different cultures in these dynamic new markets like China, the Middle East and Russia. MD Bob Betts says that ‘We have reached a level of success that now needs more structure and strategic planning, and this is the next phase of work….’
