Hill Holt Wood
Sustainable Architecture and Environment
Description and aims
The project utilised funding from the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme to assist Hill Holt Wood Social Enterprise to develop a range of eco-energy buildings including a sustainable community hall.
About Hill Holt Wood
Hill Holt Wood is an environmental social enterprise and charity. Hill Holt Wood is a small (34-acre) woodland where over twenty people are employed providing countryside management services, working with at-risk, excluded or unemployed young people as the base of a sustainable construction company.
It is our goal to be an exemplar site demonstrating true sustainability – environmental, social and economic.
How the project is being undertaken
The design of the Community Hall was generated as a student design competition at the Lincoln School of Architecture with contribution from Simons Design and Hill Holt Wood. The building which is currently under construction is being used as a vehicle to stimulate increased action from the building industry in response to the challenges of climate change. The project has succeeded in raising aspiration amongst architects and clients for innovative sustainable architecture which responds to:
- reduction in energy usage
- sustainable selection of materials
- embodied and whole life usage
- recycling and reuse
- sustainable energy sources
- minimising of waste
Impacts and benefits
Lincoln School of Architecture, Hill Holt Wood and Simons Design have jointly published on the lessons learnt from this project. These include two journal papers and 5 conference papers/ presentations so far. The project has also helped the formation of the Construction Emissions Community of Practice (CECoP). CECoP is a voluntary and inclusive group of consultants and academics working collaboratively on developing the protocols for calculating the carbon footprint of buildings.
This KTP has been a major contribution to the Sustainable Architectural Technology research group’s work within the Centre for Sustainable Architecture and Environments (CSAAE). As a direct result of the project, CSAAE has recently been awarded two further KTP contracts to develop innovative strategies and design solutions to reduce environmental impact of buildings.
The KTP was also awarded the highest grade of ‘Outstanding’ by the KTP grading panel for its achievement in meeting its objectives in November 2007.
