Living Postcard Company

Multimedia

Description and aims

To make the ‘Living Postcard Company’ the default national archive of historic and nostalgic images across a wide range of themes.

About Living Postcard Company

The Living Postcard Company was formed in 2007 with the aim of developing an online database of nostalgic pictures. These digitised images are then made available for re-print to anyone browsing the site.

How the project is being undertaken

The Lincoln Applied Technology Services Unit (LATSU) is collaborating with the small, local business in order to help develop the technology required to:

  • Automatically resize digitised images and upload to a remote server.
  • Setup and host a remote server.
  • Display images on the web to allow interested parties to browse, search and purchase images (in printed format).
  • Manage online financial transactions

In return, LATSU will receive a proportion of any revenue generated including playing a lead in obtaining grant funding for an expansion of the project as an educational resource for schools and colleges.

The project recently launched the website: http://www.living-postcard.co.uk and is currently talking to local schools to develop an educational aspect to the project as well as locate additional images for the site. The next stage will be funding bids.

Impacts and benefits

The project is currently at an early stage but is being used as a case study in order to market the potential of LATSU to local business. This has resulted in some recent moderate consultancy success in the same field. LATSU are now gearing up consultancy bids and looking at collaborations with other Faculties and specialisms.
