Where did you go for your summer holidays this year, Bill?
Well, we spent two days at the seaside.
That's nice. Whereabouts?
We spent one day at St Bees. Its on the west coast, the far side of the Lake District.
Oh, I see. Where did you spend the other day?
That was at Robin Hood's Bay, on the east coast.
I know it. Nice place. Bit hilly, though. The sea, the gulls, the girls...
Only trouble was, we had to walk from one to the other.
Walk? Walk? But that must be, let me see...
One hundred and ninety miles.
One hundred and ninety miles! How long did it take you?
Well we spent sixteen days, walking an average of twelve miles a day. Some days were shorter, some longer, up to seventeen and a half. We walked through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors.
Gosh you must have been fit.
Not really. Although I've always liked walking, a lot of the route was quite hilly and it was quite a challenge in some places.
I bet. Did you go on your own?
Oh, no. I went with my wife Kath, and our friends Viv and Phil.
Great. Did you sleep under the stars?
Oh no, we used bed and breakfast in pubs and guesthouses en route.
But what about luggage. You must have needed at least two pairs of underpants for a trip that long.
We booked through Contours holidays, and they arranged to transfer our suitcases from one bed and breakfast to the next.
Wow! Was that expensive?
Well it was a bit. In fact for that amount of money I would have expected them to
do the walking for me!
Only joking - staying in luxurious bed and breakfast night after night does come rather
pricey. Not mentioning the bar bill...
I know your reputation in bars only too well. I bet you supped a few!
I'm afraid so. Black Sheep bitter was the staple diet for a fortnight!
So why did you do the walk?
Well it's been an ambition of mine for a while, after doing the Nidderdale Way some years ago. I decided it would be a good way of marking my half century.
My goodness, Bill. I didn't think you were that old.
Thanks.
No, much older.
Thanks very much. Would you like to see my illustrated diary?
Love to.
