Telephone numbers

Spacing of numbers

Phone numbers should be grouped groups to make them easier to read. The first group is the STD code, followed by the remaining numbers in one or two groups.

Most STD codes are five numbers. The numbers that follow are grouped as two groups of three: 01332 590 500.

Non-five digit STD codes range from three to six digits. The numbers that follow are grouped as one or two groups:

  • Three-digit STD code: 020 7589 5111
  • Four-digit STD code: 0113 812 3113
  • Six-digit STD code: 017687 32582

Phone numbers with an obvious pattern can be emphasised as follows:

  • 0371 468 0 468 UCAS Undergraduate
  • 0345 60 60 655 NHS Careers

For callers from outside the UK, use the international dialling code preceded by +, e.g. +44, and not 0044.

Contact our Customer Experience Centre on 0371 468 0 468 (or +44 330 3330 231 from outside the UK).
